Costavales: Galicia, Spain

This is a detail of one of five designs for a new alternative currency for the Costa de Morte, Galicia, Spain. The notes feature bright colours, Galacian Celtic motifs, and flora and fauna associated with the local area – in this case, the Polbo (Octopus) and Percebe, a delicacy of Galacia.

The designs were made for cost-effective printing (no offset or intaglio), so the feel of the notes veers slightly from the conventions of banknote design, with drawings that imitate engraving and large blocks of colour.
