A preliminary drawing for a new UK Five Pound note (detail), for a return to the Gold Standard. The design replaces any reference to the monarchy with Britannia, and parallels the idea of ‘return’ by recalling motifs found on pre-decimal British banknotes. For example, the central ‘five’ is based on the text found on the Bank of England’s iconic white banknotes, issued since the bank’s inception. The left side of the note features the St.George design by Pistrucci. These archaic elements are mixed with contemporary features; St.George and the many ‘Vs’ found on the note are printed with golden metallic ink.
